For non-standard doors, or doors with decorative door handles, you should consider adding a deadbolt-only smart device to the door to enable remote control and access. A smart deadbolt is simply a locking mechanism that fits into the existing deadbolt cut-out in your door, and connects to the internet to allow for remote access and programming.
To work with SmartThings, you’ll need a deadbolt that communicates using the Z-Wave network protocol. Just look for the “Z-Wave”, “Z-Wave Plus”, or “Works with SmartThings” label on the product packaging. Schlage is our favorite brand for smart door hardware, including full-sized door handles with built-in keypads.
The locks we posted below will all work with SmartThings, although Schlage Z-Wave Connect is our top pick – for quality, ease of installation, and durability.
