SmartThings 101: Setup Guide

This guide will walk you through the steps to get your new SmartThings hub/network up and running. The steps we’ll be taking are:

  1. Create a SmartThings Accounts
  2. Add a new Location to SmartThings
  3. Set up the Hub
  4. Connect some things!

1. Create SmartThings Account

Sign Up in Classic (aka “Old”) SmartThings App

You can tell you have the “old” app if the icon looks like this:

Download “Old/Classic” SmartThings App

You can download the SmartThings app from the app stores. It is available on Google Play for Android, in addition to the Apple App Store for iOS.

Create Your Free SmartThings Account

Once you’ve downloaded the SmartThings app on your smartphone, follow these steps to create your account:

  1. Open the SmartThings app
  2. Tap New to SmartThings
  3. Tap Create account
  4. Tap Agree for all the terms (after you’ve read them, of course)
  5. Enter your email address
  6. Enter your password(note: must be at least 8 characters, and must contain 1 or more number(s) and 1 letter)
  7. Confirm your password by re-typing
  8. Enter your first and last name
  9. Enter a ZIP code (presumably yours) and a date of birth (irrelevant)
  10. Tap Next
  11. Tap Done
  12. Select your country
  13. Tap Continue
  14. Done!

You can tell you have the “new” app if the icon looks like this:

Download SmartThings App

First and foremost, download the new SmartThings app. It is available on Google Play for Android, as well as the Apple App Store for iOS.

Create Your Free SmartThings Account

Once you’ve downloaded the SmartThings app on your smartphone, follow these steps to create your account:

  1. Open the SmartThings app
  2. Tap Sign In
  3. Tap Create account
  4. Tap Agree for the all the terms (after you’ve read them, of course)
  5. Enter your email address
  6. Enter your password (note: must be at least 8 characters, and must contain 1 or more number(s) and 1 letter)
  7. Enter password again to confirm
  8. Enter first and last name
  9. Enter a ZIP code (presumably yours) and a date of birth (irrelevant)
  10. Tap Next and wait…
  11. Tap Done
  12. Select your country
  13. Tap Continue
  14. Done!

2. Create a New Location

Your SmartThings hub will think of your home as a single “location”. These steps will create a new location (usually your home) to define the bounds of the network. To create your first new location, follow these steps (can be repeated to add additional locations):

  1. Tap on the Devices tab
  2. Tap the Location drop-down menu at the top of the screen
  3. Tap Add location
  4. Name your new Location
  5. Tap Geolocation and drag the pin to set your physical location
  6. Tap Save

Next, you’ll need to associate your new SmartThings Hub with your newly created Location.

3. Set Up the Hub

Now that you’ve define the location and associated your new hub to it, follow these steps to finish setting up your SmartThings network.

  1. From the Dashboard, tap Add device
  2. Android: Tap Add Device Manually
  3. Select Hubs
  4. Tap Samsung SmartThings Hub
  5. Follow the on-screen guide for connecting the Hub
  6. Tap Next
  7. Enter the Welcome Code for your Hub
    • The unique 6-character Welcome Code for the Samsung SmartThings Hub (Hub v2) is packaged with the Hub and located on a card under the Hub’s tray in the box
  8. Tap Register your Hub
  9. Wait while the Hub downloads any available firmware upgrades. Do not unplug the Hub during the setup process. When the Hub shows solid green LEDs, tap Continue
  10. Wait for the success message that your Hub has been activated
  11. Tap Done

4. Connect Some Things

  1. From the Dashboard, tap Add device
  2. Android: Tap Add Device Manually
  3. Select the category of your device
  4. Tap the name of the device
  5. While the Hub searches, perform the connection/inclusion process specific to that device
    • Follow the on-screen pairing steps or consult the device’s manual for instructions
  6. When the device is discovered, a message will appear that the device was successfully connected to your SmartThings Hub
  7. Tap Edit to rename the device
  8. When finished, tap Done
  9. Tap Done again to confirm
